Qualities of EN24T Tool Steel

Hardenability of EN24T Tool Steel

EN24T has hardenability capabilities, which is why it is used in tough and heavy applications where wear resistance, hardness, and tensile strength are of critical importance. Produced in the quenched and tempered or ‘T’ condition, the material can be surface hardened up to 60 HRC by heat or nitriding processes, which will improve the material's wear capabilities.

Remember, the ‘T’ condition, EN24T round bars bigger than 250 mm in diameter may have lesser mechanical properties when reaching the material’s centre. To increase the centre core mechanical properties, it is stated that larger round bars are annealed. Bar and billets supplied in the annealed condition also benefit from increased machinability.

Impact Resistance of EN24T Tool Steel

EN24T is highly valued for its superior impact strength at low temperatures. This characteristic makes it an industry standard for offshore applications, where materials must withstand extreme stress in sub-zero conditions. It is frequently specified for hydraulic bolt tensioners and heavy-duty marine handling equipment.

Machinability of EN24T Tool Steel

Although EN24T is listed as a product ready to machine, its hardness and tensile strength require specific tool strategies. The use of carbide tooling is essential. When machining EN24T in its hardened state, high-performance coated carbide inserts or ceramic-tipped tools are recommended to withstand the heat and abrasion.

This material has higher shear loading compared to alloys like EN16 or EN19. This requires rigid machine setups and optimised feed rates to prevent tool chatter or premature failure.

Due to its toughness, heat dissipation is a challenge. High-pressure coolant protects its cutting edge.

Applications of EN24T Tool Steel

EN24T is a high-quality alloy steel known for its exceptional hardenability, structural strength, and wear resistance. Due to these qualities, it's a material that can be used in versatile conditions and applications, including:

  • Marine handling equipment
  • Power transmission gears, cams
  • Heavy-duty axles
  • Hydraulic bolt tensioners
  • Bolts, shafts, and studs
