Hardenability

EN24T has hardenability capabilities which is why it is used in tough and heavy applications where wear resistance, hardness, and tensile strength are of critical importance. Produced in the quenched and tempered or ‘T’ condition, the material can be surface hardened up to 60 HRC by heat or nitriding processes, which will improve the material's wear capabilities.

Please remember that in the ‘T’ condition, EN24T round bars bigger than 250 mm in diameter may have lesser mechanical properties when reaching the material’s centre. To increase centre core mechanical properties, it is stated that larger round bars are annealed. Bar and billets supplied in the annealed condition also benefit from increased machinability.

Impact Resistance

Brilliant impact values for EN24T or 817M40T as it is also known at low service temperatures is another fantastic characteristic of this material and because of this, EN24T has become a regularly used material in offshore applications such as in hydraulic bolt tensioners and marine handling equipment.

Machinability

Although EN24T is listed as a product ready to machine it is harder to machine and by using a carbide in the machining process is vital. EN24T also known as 817M40T can be machined when hardened by using stainless tip tools. There is a higher chance of shear loading in comparison to other engineering steels such as EN19 and EN16.

Applications

EN24T also known as 817M40T brings an excellent combination of hardenability, strength, and wear resistance. examples of the applications in which it is used include:

  • Marine handling equipment
  • Power transmission gears, cams
  • Heavy-duty axles
  • Hydraulic bolt tensioners
  • Bolts, shafts, and studs
